How to Get into an MBA Program

7

Applying to a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) program can be the first step in advancing your career and furthering your education. Below are some tips and advice on the admissions requirements and process.

Online and in-person program application process

MBA programs are now offered in a variety of formats to support working professionals who often pursue them. An online MBA may be offered asynchronously so students do not have to log in at a certain time for class. This allows students the flexibility to submit their materials throughout the week at times that are convenient for them. At University of Bridgeport, the online courses are also accelerated meaning students can complete the program faster, in as little as one year!

Some schools, like University of Bridgeport, may offer both on-campus and online options. The application process is the same, however some concentrations are only offered in person. At University of Bridgeport, these are Accounting, Finance, and Marketing.

Education Prerequisites

MBA programs may require you to meet certain prerequisites prior to starting their program. These courses could include accounting, business law, marketing, and/or management. At University of Bridgeport, these prerequisites are offered as apart of the program to accommodate students from a wide range of academic backgrounds.

Academic Requirements (GPA)

In addition to the prerequisite requirements, MBA programs may have a GPA requirement. For example, University of Bridgeport requires students to have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Admission Requirements

The MBA admissions requirements are similar to other graduate programs; however, there are ways you can boost your application. You will need transcripts from all institutions you’ve attended. This is especially important for schools, like University of Bridgeport, that can waive you from preparatory courses depending on your academic background. In addition to transcripts, you may be required to submit a resume, personal statement, and/or letters of recommendation.

Work Experience

Work experience may not be required for admissions; however, including it as applicable in your resume is a great idea. You can tailor your resume to highlight experiences and qualities that would be desirable

in an MBA candidate. For example, perhaps you trained new hires on various tasks or lead recruitment events. These are both great examples to mention in your resume for an MBA as it shows you have management and leadership skills.

MBA Essays

For schools that require a personal statement or essay, it is worth reaching out to the admissions team for a prompt. Generally, the review committee is looking to see why you’re applying for an MBA. It’s important to include why you’ve chosen this school specifically. Perhaps there was a concentration that spoke to you or you liked the accelerated format. You can also mention what your MBA career goals are for after graduation.

Letters of Recommendation

If required, letters of recommendation should come from those who know you in a professional capacity. You can ask professors in your undergraduate program to write a letter on your ability to handle graduate level coursework. You could also ask work supervisors to write letters reflecting on your leadership and management skills.

Ready to apply?
