Later that day, Himes addressed concerns about free speech following the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. He tweeted: "Free speech often makes us uncomfortable— that doesn’t make it wrong. That Mahmoud Khalil was detained, apparently without legal basis, violates his civil liberties and jeopardizes all Americans’ free speech. Unless Trump can prove that Khalil violated the law, he must be freed."

On March 13, 2025, Himes commented on ongoing legal challenges involving high-profile figures such as Elon Musk and Donald Trump. He noted: "In case after case after case we are turning back Elon Musk’s and Donald Trump’s illegal behavior. These are VA employees, food inspectors and people who track tornadoes and keep air travel safe."
