Washington, DC — On July 14, the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, Jim Himes (CT-04), issued the following statement regarding the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.

“Today, we should have been voting to support our troops, bolster our armed forces, and advance our national defenses. Instead, Republicans chose to hinge the safety of the American people on their imbecilic ‘culture wars,’ using a traditionally bipartisan bill to attack women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community.

“The suggestion that this thinly-veiled bigotry represents Congressional priorities is an embarrassment to this institution. Our national security is paramount, but I cannot in good faith vote for a bill that strips opportunity and autonomy from the men and women who have chosen to risk their lives for our country.”
