After more than three decades of teaching music and running the successful, award-winning Trumbull High School Golden Eagles Marching Band (THSGEMB) program, it has been announced that Peter Horton has died, leaving behind an impressive legacy, and having had an important, positive impact upon thousands of high school students.
Many have commented on his recognition of the potential in a student, noting his ability to bring out the best in each performer, belief in his mantra-- Pride, Attitude, and Concentration, and how he shaped so many to become the musicians, teachers, and adults they have become.
Under Mr. Horton’s direction, the THSGEMB marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1997 and again in 2017, as well as in the Inaugural Parade in 2001 for George Bush and in 2009 for Barack Obama in Washington, DC. The band won several regional and national championships due to his tutelage.
In 2019, Mr. Horton was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Musical Arts Conference, a nonprofit organization that promotes musical ensemble instruction and competition across Connecticut. He was widely known as one of the best music educators in the Northeast. Peter Horton will be greatly missed in Trumbull and in the music profession. Rest in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Horton family.
