The Sacred Heart University men’s soccer team received several top honors from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, according to a Nov. 10 announcement. Daniel Losfablos was named MAAC Defender of the Year, Luca Marinelli earned MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year, and head coach Anthony Anzevui was selected as MAAC Coach of the Year. Several players were also recognized on All-MAAC teams.

These awards come after Sacred Heart finished its regular season with an 8-3-5 overall record and a 7-0-3 mark in conference play, securing the program’s first-ever regular-season conference title. The team accumulated 29 points this season, marking its highest total since 2011. The Pioneers combined strong defense with balanced scoring, allowing only 16 goals while scoring 27.

Losfablos anchored the defense in 15 matches and contributed goals against Canisius, Yale, and FDU. He helped lead a defensive unit that finished first in the league with a 1.00 goals-against average. Marinelli recorded six shutouts over 14 games and led the league in goals-against average at 0.51 during conference play.

On offense, David Garcia Gallego led Sacred Heart with five goals and four assists for a total of 14 points, all career highs. Ivan Morcillo added five goals and two game-winners in conference play, while Carlos Gonzalez Palau started all games on defense and scored one goal. Danny Istambouli earned second-team honors with five goals and three assists.

Coach Anzevui is in his fourth season overall and second in the MAAC with Sacred Heart. Under his leadership, the team achieved one of its most successful seasons in recent history.

Looking ahead, Sacred Heart will face Fairfield University on Thursday, November 13 at Park Ave Field for their opening match of the MAAC Tournament.
