Sacred Heart men’s soccer defeats Marist University 3-0 in MAAC match

The Sacred Heart University men’s soccer team defeated Marist University 3-0 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game on Oct. 15 at Tenney Stadium.

The win keeps Sacred Heart at the top of the MAAC standings with a conference record of 5-0-1 and an overall record of 6-3-3. Marist now stands at 2-3 in conference play and 6-3-2 overall.

Sophomore Ivan Morcillo led the Pioneers with two goals, bringing his season total to four. Morcillo scored first in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from Brady Poor. Goalkeeper Luca Marinelli made three saves, including one during a two-on-one situation in the 14th minute to maintain Sacred Heart’s lead.

Momentum shifted further toward Sacred Heart when Marist’s Aiden Arber received a red card in the 39th minute, giving the Pioneers a man advantage for the rest of the match. In the second half, Morcillo scored again in the 64th minute off an assist from senior captain David Garcia Gallego. Junior Danny Istambouli added another goal in the 75th minute, also assisted by Garcia Gallego, sealing the victory.

Sacred Heart outshot Marist with eleven total shots to nine and had four shots on goal compared to Marist’s three. Marinelli finished with a shutout while Marist goalkeeper Jaime Lowell allowed three goals and made one save.

The Pioneers will return home to face Canisius at Park Ave Field on Saturday, October 18 at noon.
