Sacred Heart lost to Yale 14–5 in a non-conference baseball game on April 22. The Pioneers kept the game close in the first two innings, but a strong second inning by Yale proved decisive.
The outcome matters for both teams as they continue their respective conference schedules, with Sacred Heart now holding a record of 12-23 and Yale improving to 23-11.
Yale started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning. Sacred Heart responded immediately when Peter Link singled, stole second base, and scored on Gavin Donohue’s two-run homer, tying the score at 2–2 after one inning. However, Yale took control in the second inning by scoring six runs.
The Pioneers answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. Daniel Rice III singled and advanced on a wild pitch before Nathan Bowes singled him to third. After Link walked to load the bases, Ronan Donohue drew an RBI walk and Jacob Schmutz reached on a fielder’s choice to bring another run home, narrowing Yale’s lead to 8–4.
Yale added more runs over several innings while Sacred Heart’s pitching staff tried to contain them. Andrew Sager recorded a strikeout in the fifth inning; Christian Trantino added another in the sixth; James Aselta struck out one batter in the eighth. In Sacred Heart’s half of that inning, Link hit a solo home run for his second run scored of the day.
The Pioneers will look ahead as they return home for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series against Siena from April 24 through April 26 at Veterans Park.
