Sacred Heart lost to Central Connecticut State University in a midweek baseball matchup, according to a May 5 announcement. The Pioneers stayed close early, but CCSU pulled away in the later innings for the win.
The result brings Sacred Heart’s record to 15-28 overall and 11-12 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Central Connecticut moves to 15-23 overall and 11-16 in the Northeast Conference. Both teams have faced challenges this season as they approach their final series.
CCSU scored first with a run in the opening inning before Sacred Heart pitcher Anakin Underhill recorded a strikeout to end the frame. Underhill added another strikeout in the second inning, and Andrew Sager followed with one of his own as relief pitcher in the third. CCSU extended its lead with another run in the fourth inning.
Sacred Heart responded when CJ Nolan drew a walk, advanced on a wild pitch, and then scored on an RBI single by Ronan Donohue. However, CCSU increased its advantage by scoring four runs in the fifth inning, two more runs in the seventh, and four runs again in the ninth inning. Relief pitchers Christian Trantino and Jon Peterson each recorded strikeouts during their appearances while PJ Rogan finished out the eighth with back-to-back strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Sacred Heart will travel to Canisius for its next series of games scheduled for Friday through Sunday.
