Morcillo’s late goal secures Sacred Heart win over Saint Peter’s in MAAC opener

The Sacred Heart University men’s soccer team defeated Saint Peter’s 2-1 in their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener on Sep. 20 at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The match marked the start of conference play for both teams, with Sacred Heart improving to a record of 2-3-2 overall and 1-0 in the MAAC, while Saint Peter’s fell to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Sam McCann opened the scoring for Sacred Heart just three minutes into the game, giving the Pioneers an early lead. Ivan Morcillo added a second goal in the 86th minute after receiving a pass from senior captain David Garcia Gallego. The Peacocks managed to score in the 89th minute but were unable to equalize before time expired.

Goalkeeper Luca Marinelli made four saves for Sacred Heart, his highest total of the season, allowing only one goal. For Saint Peter’s, Moritz Conrad recorded three saves and conceded two goals.

Morcillo’s goal was his first game-winner of the season. The Pioneers will return home to Park Ave Field on September 27 to continue MAAC play against Merrimack at 4:00 p.m.
