Sacred Heart University men’s cross country runner Matthew Vene was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Male Runner of the Week, according to an Oct. 2 announcement from the conference.

The recognition follows Vene’s performance at the Brown University Bear Invitational, where he led his team with a time of 27:00 on the eight kilometer course. The junior from Bayside, New Jersey, finished 21st overall and helped Sacred Heart secure third place out of 22 teams at the event.

Vene’s placement at Brown marked his highest finish of the season so far. Earlier in September, he recorded a season-best time of 26:45 in the eight kilometer race at the Manhattan University Jasper Fall XC Invitational. That meet also gave Sacred Heart its first opportunity to compete against several other MAAC teams this year.

The Pioneers are scheduled to compete next on Saturday, October 12 at the 112th Annual New England Cross Country Championships. Additional details about upcoming meets and results can be found on sacredheartpioneers.com.
