Jim Himes, U.S. Congressman representing Connecticut’s 4th district since 2009, voiced strong concerns on social media regarding recent actions and rhetoric from the U.S. President related to the conflict involving Iran.
On April 7, 2026, Himes wrote, “This is immensely disturbing language from a US President. Donald Trump has already dragged the United States into a wildly unpopular and unnecessary war that has cost 13 American lives. Further escalation will harm countless civilians and put many more servicemembers at risk.”
The following day, on April 8, he commented on developments in the conflict: “Happy that the shooting has stopped, and that the US did not undertake a scorched earth campaign of war crimes. But make no mistake: Iran has not only survived, but achieved strategic wins beyond their wildest dreams. This dangerous humiliation is WHY Congress must debate war.” In a subsequent post on the same day, Himes added, “For example: https://t.co/b2mOtG3mEd”
Himes’ comments reflect ongoing debates within Congress about presidential authority in military conflicts and underscore his view that legislative debate is necessary when engaging in acts of war.
Himes has represented Connecticut’s 4th District since succeeding Chris Shays in 2009. He was born in Lima, Peru in 1966 and resides in Cos Cob. Himes graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1988.
