The Sacred Heart University men’s soccer team secured a 1-0 win over Merrimack College in its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference home opener on Sept. 27 at Park Ave Field.
The match was marked by strong defensive play and physicality, with seven yellow cards and one red card issued as both teams competed for their second conference victory of the season. The only goal came in the 76th minute when Sacred Heart captain David Garcia Gallego broke through the Merrimack defense for a one-on-one opportunity against goalkeeper Nelton Semedo, finishing calmly to put the Pioneers ahead.
Goalkeeper Luca Marinelli played a key role for Sacred Heart, making four saves—including stopping a penalty kick from Merrimack’s Alessandro Bedei in the first half—to earn his third win of the season. Marinelli’s performance tied his season-high for saves in a single game.
Other top performers included Ivan Morcillo, who registered three shots on goal, and Danny Istambouli, who contributed two shots with one on target. For Merrimack, Semedo recorded six saves but conceded the game’s only goal.
With this result, Sacred Heart improved its record to 3-3-2 overall while Merrimack fell to 2-5-1. The Pioneers will continue conference play on Wednesday, October 1, when they travel to face Quinnipiac University at QU Soccer and Lacrosse Field.
